Homemade sump pump situation

A healthy basement makes a healthy home.  Sometimes it's all about the sump pump operation.  As you can see in this picture there is a pump in a 5 gallon bucket sitting in a rough opening in the slab floor.  In theory this can work but there should be plan B.  If the power goes out there is no battery backup.  The PVC line might pick up dirt with the drain water.  Is that old pump working properly?
