Residential smoke alarm program

Smoke alarms Smoke alarm distribution to Berrien County residents.

SERVPRO of Berrien County has been providing fire cleanup and restoration to residential customers since 1995.  As a way to give back to the community, we sponsor a smoke alarm distribution program annually.  Over the past 14 years we have donated 10,000+ alarms to county fire departments for free distribution to residents in need.

SERVPRO of Berrien County partners with Home Depot and Midwest Family Broadcasting for the purchase, distribution and "getting the word out" to residents.

October is Fire Prevention Month.  Berrien County Fire Chiefs told us 14 years ago that the one thing we could help them do is provide smoke alarms to those that can't afford them.  So during October residents hear on the radio how they can call their local fire department to request smoke alarms for their homes.  The fire department will even install them properly.  The program has been a great success.

If you are ever the victim of fire damage you can call SERVPRO of Berrien County  269-925-6841 for board-up, cleanup and restoration.

1,000 smoke alarms for Berrien County

SERVPRO of Berrien County donates 1,000 smoke alarms for fire departments to install for residents.  We have done this for 15 years and are proud to help the community.

Smoke alarms play a vital role in saving lives, and when properly installed, can reduce the risk of fire injury in half.

The National Fire Protection Association recommends smoke alarms be install in every bedroom, outside all sleeping quarters and on every level of the house. Business owners should consult the local Fire Marshall to ensure specific building fire codes and smoke detectors requirements are met.

Smoke alarms work best when paired with a fire escape plan. A plan allows your family, employees or client to escape quickly and safely in an emergency situation.

Review the following tips regarding smoke detector installation and maintenance.

-Install smoke alarms on every level of the home including the basement.

- Smoke alarms should be installed away from the kitchen to prevent false alarms. Generally, they should be at least 10 feet from a cooking appliance.

-Test smoke alarms at least once a month using a test button.

-Replace batteries in all smoke alarms at least once a year. If an alarm "chirps" the battery is low and should be replaced right away.

-Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.
